the delsin re-issue arm turns its attention to lost trax. this ep features four cuts taken from two different eps, the saturnian system and lost trax 2 from 2006 and 2010 respectively. saturnian system opens the ep with some acid laced electro slickness. fluttering snares and spacey synths carry it away into the cosmos, then the sequel gets much busier. scurrying lines dart about in manic but funky fashion, with serene pads off setting the high energy drums. self destruct sequence then drops into an urgent, slippery electronic groove riddled with squelchy sounds and rubbery bass all perfectly orchestrated. last of all, birth is a nimble electronic house cut with plaintive synths and kinetic drums that wiggle and wriggling through the night sky. this is an ep stuffed with timeless sounds and is another essential reissue from delsin.

this may look like just another lp, but in reality, it s a journey. i always made electronic music, but sometimes i wanted to get a musical point across that a synthesizer couldn t reach: the human touch, the perfection of imperfections, atonal experiments, the euphoria of the slightly out-of-tune fuzz guitar. so 7 years ago, my friend weytkin and me started a guitar combo to see what we could do with our collection of guitars and vintage equipment. the only machine i was 100% familiar with was the drummer: my trusty roland tr-808.- � ruud lekx (rude 66, jagdstaffel 66, lekx).

swiss pair domo are back on their own framework label with another fine ep featuring two fresh and inventive cuts.

from the twilight zone of rhythm section international comes a new label for 2017: international black. this is the offshoot�s 3rd release this year and the machine shows no signs of slowing down. bradley zero�s ear for new talent continues to pay off as we are introduced to yet another young pair of producers, mallard & lt, going by the name of �j deep�. mallard, a 19 yo jazz student who made a big splash with his debut rs intl ep, �verte�, returns with a track aimed more squarely at the dancefloor. although hypnotic and ethereal, it packs a punch, with the arrangement and musicality belying mallard�s musical training at trinity college. on the flip side, mallard joins forces with another promising producer who goes by the name �lt� in their collaborational partnership known as j.deep. complex jazz chords swim around 909�s to create an elevating techno roller that climbs and climbs only to give way to sparse rave stabs and ecstatic snare patterns. tried and tested for the best part of a year, these are 2 serious jams, proven to cause dancefloor frenzy.

�i�ve said it before, but dancehall and its influence on uk music has been a massive inspiration for me, going way back to hearing chris goldfinger on radio 1 playing music that was like nothing else i�d heard before. i love that fundamental rhythmic pattern, and i love how within the same world you can have some tunes that are built around the sweetest melodies and harmonies, and others that are built around super-tuff minimal drums and crazy squeeks and bleeps.
when it came time to build another ep for critical, i decided to link up with my good friend and long-time collaborator rider shafique, who has a much deeper knowledge of this music than me, and together create something that references both old and new dancehall, while still being playable in the kinds of sets i ve become known for. there�s no halftime and no chopped-up jungle breaks here - we wanted to make something really focussed and even disciplined - and hopefully we�ve succeeded.

time to welcome another newcomer to freerange with a brilliant debut that has already been gaining a lot of interest from early spins. stefano ritteri should be a familiar name to many, having dropped several well-received releases on key labels such as pets, rockets & ponies and get physical as well as his own monthly rinse france radio show. a producer in the old school sense, he has the ability and desire to flip from deep, emotive and down tempo jams to the most impactful, high energy floor fillers, all with a deft touch and unique and experimental spin. the italian producer, now relocated to london, has a studio chock full of vintage synths and hardware outboard which keep him inspired and ensure his output sounds fresher and fatter than most, as can be heard on this excellent two-tracker entitled a different happiness ep.

eye o is the convergence of a few bay area stalwarts�kevin woodruff, formerly of tussle, and jason schwartz - and �deux o & debut� is their first studio-recorded public offering. the five-track, fifty-minute- long lp is a weaving journey through a pastiche of styles that�re all nephews, cousins, brothers, sisters of one another. kraut-rooted motorik drums reconfigure into more complicated math-y patterns, razor-sharp dance-punk guitars stretch out and dissolve into dubby post-rock atmospherics, synth loops you�d more commonly find in house tracks get grafted onto fuzzy psychedelic breakdowns, hard rock licks lock into chunky industrial grooves.
less for dancefloor destruction and more for trippy weekenders, the instrumental record manages to both be a focused, cerebral, conceptual hunk of fat to chew on and a spaced-out, intuitive ride through the cosmos. for use during those off-kilter small hours of the night just as much as it is vision quests and introspective weekends. it�s rare that an outpouring of so much can feel so simple and sublime.

airhead has put out some great music this year. kicking off with the radiophonic ice of kazzt for mumdance s different circles and just recently the low slung cristobal on ps records his production chops get bolder by the minute. it s no surprise seeing as he spent much of the previous year producing key tracks for the incredible -1-800 dinosaur presents trim- album alongside bullion and boothroyd as well as regularly touring and writing with long-time musical partner james blake. back with another 12- on hemlock, his first since 2014 s rolling october / macondo this time the sound is dustier, warmer, but packing twice the punch all the while retaining his signature understated wild-man groove. both tracks are capable on dancefloor whilst richly layered, packed with detail and arranged for maximum connectivity with contemporary beat styles such as house, techno and breaks. what happened to ricky martin? shaded is the twisted latin stepper you didn t know you needed, so much, right now. polished drums dug into a tweaky sci-fi soundbed make way for the curveball drop not every dj will be able to style out but those brave few that do will reap the reward. captain, we have an incoming transmission. by now, antipolo will be on the long-range scanners of a several fleets in this sector and is finally ready for replication and deployment. beaming out to the far reaches of the dancefloor we have bass, breakbeats and synth hooks but not as we know it together forming an advanced composite bond of extreme strength and malleability.

girlfriends and other machines is another distinctive work by mostly undiscovered berlin based artist rhytch displaying his unique dirty and soulful sound. the 6 track ep varies from edgy deep house to weirdo krautrock reminding one of the genreroots, while sounding like a legit fresh reinterpretation. the artists voice being revealed on most of the tracks is giving the listener a glimpse of who he is and adds some character traits to infamous rhytch. the ep gets completed by an outstanding marbod remix, which is going to make people snap with its flickering distorted 909 hats woven into one of his typical psychedelic housepads creating an irresistible groove and atmosphere. the ep being released on berlin underground imprint lofile records is a nice prospect of what is to expect of further releases and obviously a wise choice for label and artist which share the same hobbies - drinking and smoking.

lumiÞreslanuit (alias lln) is glad to welcome back paris-based music composer, live performer and dj vadim svoboda for the 10th release of the label. in addition to be a close friend of the lln crew and a regular of the label�s showcases, vadim svoboda has also become a key artist of the label. indeed, it�s with him that it has all started, about three years ago, when he released his syntherapie ep (lln000) on the label. nine releases (plus one) later, we�re glad to have him again on board, this time with another format as he�s about to release his first album seed (lln009+1). seed is made up of two records: roots (vinyl 1: lln009) and canopy (vinyl 2: lln009+1). whereas roots sounds like a mini-album in the album where melodic and melancholic notes alternates with dark and strong beats, canopy seems - according to its composition - to refer directly to his syntherapie ep, even though the listener might find the same inspirations in both records.

after a lengthy hiatus, tuskegee music is back with a heavyweight release indeed: it features tracks written by detroit heavyweights seth troxler�under his young seth alias� and cult fxhe boss omar s. amazingly they were written 11 years ago and have been long forgotten until recently being unearthed. the first track here was inspired by a trip seth made to berlin�s club der visionaere in 2005. �it basically was me returning to detroit and telling omar about this crazy music i heard ricardo play during the day.� the result, �deep�(cdv 2006 mix), is a spine tingling atmospheric deep house track. the drums are lo-fi and loose, the bassline is a meandering thing that really sucks you in and soft, gentle toms tumble around the groove and encourage you to cut loose. then comes the experimental slow motion drum shuffle of �detroit after midnight� which the pair made after �finding loads of weird records in his basement sampling them and making a classic mpc detroit cut.� it has the sounds of people talking as if coming from the room next door laid over a lazy and undulating bassline, and is brilliantly weird and sketchy. last of all, young seth goes solo on �luiza�s inferno� five minutes of him jamming on omar�s ms20 with a warbling synth line coated in warm tape hiss and layers of dust. it�s a beatless piece that shows how inventive and ahead of his time troxler was even as a young man. this is a brilliantly unusual ep and another winner for seth troxler and the martinez brothers� tuskegee label.

proving he knows how to work a dancefloor, rising star latmun makes his debut on hot creations with the mighty footsteps, featuring vocalist amy douglas. in equal measure, the b side piquant delivers another heavy hitter.
a certified tech house bomb, footsteps is full fire from of the off. new york based vocalist, amy douglas, brings extra heat, adding a distinct intensity in the build up. with a current track out on soul clap records and an upcoming ep with juan maclean as part of their peach melba project, amy is one to keep an eye on. one the flip piquant offers another peak time killer for the dancefloor.

the 3 musketeers are back, pouring new life into two more obscure, italian techno tracks from early 90s. roby j s track -charming the cobra,- also from the -where am i?- ep, originally released on interactive test records, in 1991. a real trip between psychic percussions and trancey synths. the flip hosts model citizen, aka gabry fasano, another legend from the 90s italian progressive and techno scene. -the right to dance and learn- is a perfect after-hour house track, with a trippy arpeggio and deep, somnolent chords. both tracks have been extended by lom, assuring maximum joy and mixing pleasure.

another 1960s 7inch soul gem, unearthed and held up to the light courtesy of rocafort records. the heroine of this story is atlanta born delia dee dee gartrell, schooled in the art of gospel and jazz, but banned by her mother to sing any r n b that is until delia met the mighty hannibal, a powerhouse bluesy soul producer and future husband who put her up where she belonged and got her singing about stuff that her mother wouldn t have approved of. mid-tempo stomper, i must be doing something right, is an irresistible sassy classic, originally the b side of the single if you got what it takes (they can t take what you got) released on maverick records. the horns and drums tease the toe-tapping rhythm along while delia belts out with raw fire about not being a great looker, cook or housecleaner for her man, but when its time for sleeping, he thinks i m something outtasight. i must be doing something right. cheeky in spirit, chunky in swing. full of all the urgency and feistiness you d expect from a repressed southern soul vocalist. written by delia and hannibal, fight fire with fire boasts a similar production style but this time with a prominent electric guitar riff, emotive strings and heavenly backing vocals. describing the cheating man who s gonna get exactly what he dishes out, delia reads out the riot act with more punchy promise than threat. a must for all 7inch soul collectors, a thing of rare beauty.
